"Inspired by the Marine Environment": Twenty-five posters from MEDASSET’s Competition on display at the Athens International Airport (14/1-30/4/2013)

The Athens International Airport and MEDASSET (Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles) welcome travellers and airport visitors to the Poster Exhibition “Inspired by the Marine Environment,” celebrating twenty-five years of MEDASSET’s environmental and conservation work.

This is MEDASSET’s third exhibition at the airport, and it offers a view of marine life through the eyes of talented graphic design students. MEDASSET, in cooperation with AKTO College of Art and Design, held a design competition during November and December 2012. All designs were required to promote the need to protect the Mediterranean Sea while raising public awareness of the degradation of the marine environment. Out of forty-eight works submitted to the competition, twenty-five were chosen for display by a Judging Panel, and the three prizewinning designs will be announced during a presentation ceremony to be held at the airport on January 25th.

Also on display during this exhibition are photographs from MEDASSET’s archive, documenting the organisation’s work in protecting sea turtles over the past twenty-five years.

“Inspired by the Marine Environment” will be accessible to visitors on a 24-hour basis from January 14th until April 30th, 2013. The exhibition is located in the “Environment and Culture” section of the departure gate (Entrance 3).

MEDASSET (Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles) was founded in 1988 for the protection of sea turtles and their habitats throughout the Mediterranean, through research programs, campaigns, education, and political lobbying. Studies have been conducted throughout the 7,800 kilometers of Mediterranean coastline, from the northeastern Aegean and Ionian Sea to the coast of Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, and most recently Albania, where the valuable information about sea turtles was publicized for the first time, allowing for them to now be protected. Since their founding, MEDASSET has been a permanent member/observer of the Bern Convention (Council of Europe) and has collaborated with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP/MAP) in implementing the Mediterranean Action Plan for the Protection of Sea Turtles.
