01. Joint Address by the Chairman and the CEO

Prof. Stratos Papadimitriou - Chairman of the Board of Directors Ten years since the launch of its operations in March
2001, Athens International Airport celebrates a very
active decade marked by operational excellence, strong
entrepreneurship, and numerous distinctions and awards
for accomplishments in diverse areas. AIA, one of the
most significant infrastructure projects in Europe and a
pioneering public-private partnership, quickly set new
standards and changed perceptions that were prevailing
in the Greek aviation scene. The robust and diversified
business model of the Airport Company coupled with its
dynamic aviation development strategy have resulted in
outstanding performance - not only in years of economic
growth but also through the recent international and
Greek economic crisis - with significant positive impact
on employment, entrepreneurship and tourism, at local,
regional, and national level.

Today, we see with pride our airport having evolved into
a major asset for the Greek economy based on a multi-
faceted business community comprising of 300 entities
and more than 15,000 employees, with an annual added
value corresponding to 2.14% of the national GDP,
creating 63,000 jobs in Greece both within and outside the
airport’s perimeter. On top of this, the Airport Company
has directly contributed to the Greek State in the form
of income tax, dividends and Airport Development Fund
for the period of 2002-2010 a total of €755 million, which
corresponds to 75% of the company’s net distributions to
its shareholders.

2010 was definitely a challenging year for Athens
International Airport, since contrary to the European
and global recovery, the Greek aviation market went
through extremely unfavourable developments driven
mostly by the country’s macroeconomic situation,
combined with the fleet and network consolidation of
the two home-based carriers. Affected by the industry-
wide and Athens-specific developments, traffic posted a
moderate 5% shortfall in passenger volumes with 15.4
million passengers, and a sharper 8.7% decrease in the
number of flights, which amounted to 191.8 thousand
movements. It was the domestic sector that was mostly
affected due to the negative developments in the Greek
economy, combined with the consolidation of services to
Greek destinations. Despite the overall negative climate,
six new destinations were added to the airport’s network,
while we welcomed eight new airline partners. Our
airline support and developmental programs continued
throughout the year, with an enhanced package of
developmental incentives to the carriers who invested
with the introduction of additional and new services to
Athens. Furthermore, for a second consecutive year, all
charges remained unchanged without any inflationary
adjustments.
