Monument of
the Unknown Soldier
The sculpture depicting a dying
hoplite was designed in 1928 by
the architect Emmanuel Lazarides
and is guarded round the clock by
the «Evzones» of the Presidential
Guard. Anyone visiting Athens should
stop and read the two quotations by
Thucydides from Pericles’ Funeral
Oration, inscribed on the retaining
wall: «Οne bed is carried empty,
made for the unknown ones» and
«For eminent men, every place is
(worthy) burial ground». | Το σχέδιο
του ανάγλυφου νεκρού οπλίτη που
κοσμεί το Μνημείο του Άγνωστου
Στρατιώτη, σχεδίασε το 1928 ο
αρχιτέκτονας Εμμανουήλ Λαζαρίδης.
Σήμερα το Μνημείο φυλάσσεται σε
24ωρη βάση από τους εύζωνες της
Προεδρικής Φρουράς και φέρει δύο
επιγραφές από τον Επιτάφιο του
Θουκυδίδη: «Μία κλίνη κενή φέρεται
εστρωμένη των αφανών» και «Ανδρών
επιφανών πάσα γη τάφος».
