Athens International Airport welcomes once again, for the fourth year in a row, in the framework of “Fly me to the Moon” programme, the Intercultural Choir of the Greek National Opera (GNO), with a concert that will take airport visitors and passengers on a multicultural "journey", on Saturday, May 26th.

 

The Choir will present at the airport a repertoire of traditional songs from the countries of origin of some of the choir’s members, such as Apuse (Papua), Mbube (South Africa), Tuman Yarom (Ukraine), Yağmur yağar taş üstüne (Turkey), Lamma bada yatathanna (Arab-Andalus), Nepi Jano, nepi vodu (Slovakia), Malaika (Tanzania). 

 

The GNO’s Intercultural Choir was founded in 2016 as an initiative of the GNO Alternative Stage and the Learning & Participation department. Its members, who are permanent or temporary residents of Athens, are from different countries of origin, such as Ukraine, Cameroon, Slovakia, Tanzania, New Guinea, Syria, UK, USA, Greece, Iran, Kenya, Iraq, and more.

 

During the previous as well as the current artistic season, the Intercultural Choir realises workshops in refugee camps, other community centres and immigrants’ residencies. At the same time open concerts were organized at Kypseli and Omonoia square.

 

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation is the great donor of this activity. The weekly transportation of the choir’s members is covered by the kind donation of the Friends and Patrons of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre.
