Employee Events & Activities
Working at the Airport Company

The Airfield Services department ensures and maintains the highest possible level of safety on the airside of the Airport by conducting inspections and sweeping of runways, taxiways, and apron. Responsibilities include implementing safety management procedures, responding effectively to emergencies, guiding aircraft, collaborating with Air Traffic Control on operational matters, monitoring adverse weather conditions, preventing the accumulation of Foreign Object Debris, and addressing any spillage incidents. The coordination with airside facilities’ technical issues with operational impact, both on the apron and the maneuvering area as well as the friction condition of the runway surface is an integral part of airside services as well. Operational resources such as departure gates, check-in desks and aircraft stands are also under the responsibility of the Airfield Services department through ASOC Operations, and are being allocated to Airlines based on safety, capacity and preferences towards passenger experience excellence.

Under its motto “we communicate, we facilitate, we integrate”, Ground Handling and Cargo Development Department (GCD) aims to further develop and promote the three pillars under its responsibility, namely Ground Handling services, Cargo development activities and on-ground assistance to Persons with Disabilities and/or Reduced Mobility (PRM).
Building on multiple synergies through the setting up of various clusters with its business partners, GCD not only monitors its contractual counterparts’ performance, but moreover attempts to streamline and further enrich processes and flows of passenger, baggage, inflight catering, aircraft fuel, freight and mail and other services as well as further develop the cargo market in a truly synergetic manner. Especially with regards to PRM, the assistance of whose falls within AIA’s direct responsibility, GCD operates a dedicated PRM coordination office, ensuring external contractors deliver services with respect, dignity, and safety.

The Baggage Handling Systems department operates, maintains, and supports the airport's automated baggage systems, including passenger and baggage screening facilities. It is divided into Operations and Engineering sections, providing high-level services to passengers, airlines, handling agents, and authorities, ensuring accurate and timely sorting and security screening of baggage using advanced technology.

The Operational Compliance and Transformation department encompasses several key functions to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the airport. It conducts internal audits and inspections to ensure airport procedures, operations, and airside infrastructure comply with European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations. Additionally, it proactively identifies and mitigates risks to foster a safety culture across the airport, while ensuring the availability and timely provision of accurate Flight Traffic Data to support operational excellence and resource management.

The Security Operations department refers to the development and implementation of procedures, methods, and practices aimed at preventing unlawful acts against civil aviation, protecting the lives of passengers, employees, and airport visitors, as well as safeguarding facilities, infrastructure, and aircraft. Their core operations include Security Screening Checks, Access Control Checks, and the Issuance of ID Cards for Individuals and Vehicles. While most security procedures are outsourced to certified private security companies, the issuance of ID cards and permits is managed by in-house departmental staff.

The Terminal Services department ensures 24/7 customer service and operational supervision of the Main Terminal, Satellite Building, and General Aviation Facility, focusing on safe, efficient passenger services, and smooth passenger flow. It also provides accurate airport information, including flight details, services, and facilities, and oversees the Airport Call Centre and Public Address System.

Environmental protection is a top priority for the Airport Company. The Environmental Services department is responsible to manage environmental aspects that are related to airport’s operation. It monitors aircraft noise and air quality in the neighboring areas, implements annually a Climate Change Corporate Action Plan in order to reduce energy and fuel consumption, manages all types of waste generated at the airport and promote separation at source, recycling and reuse, minimizes water usage, monitos ground water and stormwater quality and takes measures to prevent water and soil pollution. Finally, it implements a comprehensive wildlife and biodiversity management program aiming to preserve local ecosystems while promoting aviation safety as well a Community Engagement Plan with initiatives supporting various social, cultural, educational and environmental projects in the local communities around the airport.

Performing the engineering operations of the company by designing, constructing, and operating/maintaining airport's infrastructure ensuring quality standards, safety and reliability. Providing technical support through the application of established principles to ensure the safe, proper, and timely operation of airport’s’ facilities and equipment. It is divided into four key functions:

- Vehicles Administration & Maintenance

Athens International Airport’s Information Technology & Telecommunication Business Unit (IT&T BU) serves as the owner, operator, and integrator of IT&T infrastructure, providing:
- IT&T Infrastructure & Services: As a licensed Telecommunications provider, IT&T BU offers a wide range of reliable, state-of-the-art, cost-effective, and innovative services to the airport community - including airlines, handlers, passengers, concessionaires, authorities, etc. – as well as consulting and integrated services to both Greek and International aviation and ICT industries.
- ISO Certification & 24/7 Support: IT&T BU ensures high reliability and operational excellence by offering ISO 9001 & ISO 20000 certified services, supporting over 300 companies and 16,000 users, operating 24/7 to meet the diverse needs of the airport community.
- Innovation Through Partnerships & POCs: IT&T BU drives innovation through Proof of Concepts (POCs) and collaborations with suppliers, ICT integrators, and startups.
- Customer-Centric Solutions: IT&T BU delivers services that streamline operations and provide a seamless, one-stop service experience, significantly reducing operational and administrative burdens for AIA’s customers.

The Retail Services department is responsible for overseeing the commercial activities at Athens airport, including retail, food and beverage, services outlets, and advertising across the Main Terminal, Satellite Terminal, and Airport Railway Station. With over 135 outlets, the Retail Services department focuses on aligning the airport's commercial offerings with market trends and passenger needs to enhance the passenger experience and maximize revenue. It also supports partners to improve sales performance, monitors operations, and implements marketing and promotional activities to boost passenger engagement.

The Landside Services department is responsible for ensuring seamless access to the Airport. This includes supervising the curbside zones at both the departure and arrival levels and managing public parking facilities from both operational and commercial perspectives. Additionally, the department oversees the concession agreements related to the Airport's car rental services through its official Car Rental Partners and manages the concession agreement for the Airport Railway Station with OSE.

The Property Development Department plays a pivotal role in maximizing non-aeronautical commercial revenue and enhancing investment returns through strategic real estate development within the airport. The department operates across two key pillars:
Ground Concessions & Land Commercial Development – This function manages and expands a diverse real estate portfolio within the airport’s non-aeronautical land holdings, focusing on long-term commercial growth and value creation. It oversees ground leases and strategic partnerships, including big retail outlets, the airport hotel, gas stations, and the country’s largest Exhibition & Conference Centre. Additionally, it drives land commercial development by identifying market opportunities, engaging with potential investors, negotiating concession agreements, and overseeing the planning and execution of new projects to maximize land use potential, ensuring that developments align with the airport’s long-term strategic goals.
Management & Leasing of Multi-Use Spaces – This function is responsible for the allocation, leasing, and optimization of office and auxiliary spaces across the Main Terminal, Satellite Terminal, multitenant buildings, and other airport facilities. It ensures efficient space utilization while accommodating the evolving needs of airport stakeholders, including airlines, ground handlers, service providers, and state authorities. This involves planning relocations, negotiating lease renewals, managing space reconfigurations, and supporting operational expansions to enhance efficiency and business continuity within the airport ecosystem.

The Facilities Services department oversees the facility management functions carried out through a combination of outsourced contracts and in-house services. The department focuses on providing efficient, cost-effective services, developing customized outsourcing strategies, and ensuring operational efficiency through structured contract management. Key functions include managing outsourced services such as cleaning & disinfection, landscaping, employees internal transportation & parking shuttle services, pest control, removal services, employees restaurants and baggage trolleys & porter services, along with in-house services like buildings consumables supply, janitorial services, and keys administration.

The Corporate Strategy sector oversees critical strategic issues, including the Business and Investment Plan, Airport Planning, Sustainability Planning and Shareholder Services. It is also responsible for Strategic Planning and Sustainability Reports, Data Analytics, Traffic Forecasting, and External Business Development. Furthermore, Corporate Strategy has led significant strategic projects such as the extension of the Company’s concession period and the Company’s listing in Athens Exchange (IPO). These projects play a vital role in shaping the long-term growth, financial planning, and operational success of the organization.

The Finance unit is responsible for managing accounting and tax, financial reporting, planning, treasury functions, and procurement. Its primary goals are to ensure financial performance and stability, optimize capital structure and cost efficiency, maintain regulatory and tax compliance, manage financial risks, and support strategic decision-making. The unit is organized into four core functions:
- Accounting and Tax
- Corporate Finance
- Treasury and Credit Control
- Procurement

Formulating corporate HR policy, aiming at developing employees and workplace culture, achieving company efficiency and employees satisfaction.

The Department comprises the whole spectrum of communication and marketing functions aiming to enhance the airport’s and the City’s connectivity through Route Development, to enhance and maintain high levels of customer experience, and to support the business and operational activities of the Company. In addition, it aims at reinforcing the airport corporate image, promoting Athens as a year-round destination and constantly creating value for the shareholders, the stakeholders and the general public.
The above functions are performed by the following teams:
- Route Development & Airline Marketing: it aims at enhancing the airport’s and the City’s connectivity through Route Development, ie. the increase of the operating airlines, the enhancement of their network to / from Athens. In addition, it provides an integrated marketing and communication support to the operating airlines.
- Passenger & Business Marketing: it develops the communication strategy and plans for the commercial and operational functions, supports and develops customer services and products, safeguards the corporate image, and promotes the destination through targeted partnerships and synergies.
- Press Office & Social Media: it handles the Media Relations, formulates the Corporate Communication Strategy and ensures the flow of the necessary corporate information to the wider public.
- Cultural Affairs & Hospitality Management: it safeguards and develops the cultural identity of the airport by organising and hosting relevant events and exhibitions. In addition, it showcases the airport through a well-organized visitors service while it welcomes and hosts high level local and international events.
- Market Insights & Customer Experience: it provides valuable and actionable data through a wide network of in-house and commissioned surveys (ad hoc, daily, and periodical) that supports business decisions that aim either to develop the airport traffic or to enhance customer satisfaction. Moreover, it handles, evaluates and replies to the incoming passenger comments.

The Legal Affairs & Corporate Governance department provides essential legal support across the Airport Company and ensures compliance with corporate governance policies and procedures as required by law. It oversees and safeguards the Company's governance processes in the context of the market and regulatory environment and addresses any legal matters, including issues related to various aspects of law, financing, tendering, concessions, and day-to-day legal inquiries. The department also handles litigation, supports contract negotiations, and collaborates with external counsel/advisor when deemed necessary. The department’s members work across various corporate areas, ensuring a comprehensive approach to the Company’s legal and business needs.

The Regulatory Compliance, Data Protection, and Ethics department ensures adherence to GDPR, regulatory standards, and ethical guidelines. It monitors data protection, manages compliance risks, oversees policy and procedure controls, supports ISO certification, and promotes ethical conduct. Key functions include maintaining compliance records, conducting audits, providing training, managing document approvals, and handling the whistleblowing system to ensure confidentiality and integrity.

The Corporate Risk and Control Department (COC) identifies and assesses risks across all aspects of airport operations, evaluating exposure to potential threats, and implementing appropriate mitigation measures aligned with corporate objectives and Board-approved risk tolerance. It monitors controls, incidents, and action plans across major risk areas.
COC leads the Business Continuity Management System (BCMS), working closely with cross-functional teams to develop prior measures and response procedures that ensure critical airport operations continue at predefined service levels during disruptions.
The department also oversees information security internal controls, ensuring the resilience of critical systems, regulatory compliance and alignment with industry best practices.
A key responsibility of COC is the monitoring and reporting of Corporate Risks - issues that pose ‘material’ financial, legal, operational or reputational risks to the company and are primarily managed by senior management. Regular updates are provided to the Audit Committee, ensuring that Management and shareholder efforts are directed at these critical issues.

Information Security plays a crucial role in protecting the Airport’s systems, data, and digital infrastructure from cyber threats and unlawful actions. By developing and overseeing the AIA’s information security strategy, this team ensures that the security measures align with legal and regulatory requirements and the company’s operational goals.
Key responsibilities include developing security policies, raising security awareness to all employees, monitoring cybersecurity measures, conducting information security risk assessments, advising management on security strategies and compliance with industry standards, staying ahead of global cybersecurity trends, and ensuring compliance with international and national security regulations and standards.

The purpose of the Internal Audit Department (IAD) is to strengthen Athens International Airport’s (AIA’s) ability to create, protect and sustain value by providing the Board and AIA’s Management with independent, risk-based and objective assurance, advice, insight and foresight.
The IAD enhances AIA’s successful achievement of its objectives, governance, risk management and control processes, decision making and oversight, reputation and credibility with its stakeholders and ability to serve the public interest.
The scope of the internal audit services cover the whole organization, including all AIA’s activities, assets, and personnel. The scope of the internal audit activities also encompasses but is not limited to objective examinations of evidence to provide independent assurance and advisory services to the Audit Committee and AIA’s Management on the adequacy and effectiveness of governance, risk management and control processes for AIA.
The IAD reports the results of its work to the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.
AIA’s IAD adhere the mandatory elements of The Institute of Internal Auditors’ International Professional Practices Framework, which are the Global Internal Audit Standards and Topical Requirements and is also governed by the provisions of the legislative framework (as set out in Law 4706/2020 and its amendments in force).
