- Communications and Marketing Corporate Unit
The Communications & Marketing Corporate Unit comprises the whole spectrum of communication and marketing functions aiming to enhance the airport’s and the City’s connectivity through Route Development, to enhance and maintain high levels of customer experience, and to support the business and operational activities of the Company. In addition, it aims at reinforcing the airport corporate image, promoting Athens as a year-round destination and constantly creating value for the shareholders, the stakeholders and the general public.
The above functions are performed by the following teams:
- Route Development & Airline Marketing: it aims at enhancing the airport’s and the City’s connectivity through Route Development, i.e. the increase of the operating airlines, the enhancement of their network to / from Athens. In addition, it provides an integrated marketing and communication support to the operating airlines.
- Passenger & Business Marketing: it develops the communication strategy and plans for the commercial and operational functions, supports and develops customer services and products, safeguards the corporate image, and promotes the destination through targeted partnerships and synergies.
- Press Office & Social Media: it handles the Media Relations, formulates the Corporate Communication Strategy and ensures the flow of the necessary corporate information to the wider public.
- Cultural Affairs & Hospitality Management: it safeguards and develops the cultural identity of the airport by organising and hosting relevant events and exhibitions. In addition, it showcases the airport through a well-organized visitors service while it welcomes and hosts high level local and international events.
- Market Insights & Customer Experience: it provides valuable and actionable data through a wide network of in-house and commissioned surveys (ad hoc, daily, and periodical) that supports business decisions that aim either to develop the airport traffic or to enhance customer satisfaction. Moreover, it handles, evaluates and replies to the incoming passenger comments.
- Human Resources Corporate Unit
Formulating corporate HR policy, aiming at developing employees and workplace culture, achieving company efficiency and employees satisfaction.
- Corporate Planning & Strategic Projects Corporate Unit
The Corporate Planning & Strategic Projects Corporate Unit oversees critical strategic issues, including the Airport Planning, Sustainability Strategic Planning Services. It is also responsible for Strategic Planning and Sustainability Reports, Data Analytics, Traffic Forecasting, and External Business Development.
- Legal Affairs and Corporate Governance Corporate Unit
The Legal Affairs & Corporate Governance Corporate Unit provides essential legal support across the Airport Company and ensures compliance with corporate governance policies and procedures as required by law. It oversees and safeguards the Company's governance processes in the context of the market and regulatory environment and addresses any legal matters, including issues related to various aspects of law, financing, tendering, concessions, and day-to-day legal inquiries. The department also handles litigation, supports contract negotiations, and collaborates with external counsel/advisor when deemed necessary. The department’s members work across various corporate areas, ensuring a comprehensive approach to the Company’s legal and business needs.
- Security Services Corporate Unit
The Security Services Corporate Unit refers to the development and implementation of procedures, methods, and practices aimed at preventing unlawful acts against civil aviation, protecting the lives of passengers, employees, and airport visitors, as well as safeguarding facilities, infrastructure, and aircraft. Their core operations include Security Screening Checks, Access Control Checks, and the Issuance of ID Cards for Individuals and Vehicles. While most security procedures are outsourced to certified private security companies, the issuance of ID cards and permits is managed by in-house departmental staff.
- Finance
The Finance unit is responsible for managing accounting and tax, financial reporting, planning, treasury functions, and procurement. Its primary goals are to ensure financial performance and stability, optimize capital structure and cost efficiency, maintain regulatory and tax compliance, manage financial risks, and support strategic decision-making. The unit is organized into four core functions:
- Accounting and Tax
- Corporate Finance
- Shareholders Services and Corporate Announcements
- Treasury and Credit Control
- Procurement
- Corporate Risk and Control Department
The Corporate Risk and Control Department (COC) identifies and assesses risks across all aspects of airport operations, evaluating exposure to potential threats, and implementing appropriate mitigation measures aligned with corporate objectives and Board-approved risk tolerance. It monitors controls, incidents, and action plans across major risk areas.
COC leads the Business Continuity Management System (BCMS), working closely with cross-functional teams to develop prior measures and response procedures that ensure critical airport operations continue at predefined service levels during disruptions.
The department also oversees information security internal controls, ensuring the resilience of critical systems, regulatory compliance and alignment with industry best practices.
A key responsibility of COC is the monitoring and reporting of Corporate Risks - issues that pose ‘material’ financial, legal, operational or reputational risks to the company and are primarily managed by senior management. Regular updates are provided to the Audit Committee, ensuring that Management and shareholder efforts are directed at these critical issues.
- Regulatory Compliance, Data Protection and Ethics
The Regulatory Compliance, Data Protection, and Ethics department ensures adherence to GDPR, regulatory standards, and ethical guidelines. It monitors data protection, manages compliance risks, oversees policy and procedure controls, supports ISO certification, and promotes ethical conduct. Key functions include maintaining compliance records, conducting audits, providing training, managing document approvals, and handling the whistleblowing system to ensure confidentiality and integrity.
- Facilities Services
The Facilities Services department oversees the facility management functions carried out through a combination of outsourced contracts and in-house services. The department focuses on providing efficient, cost-effective services, developing customized outsourcing strategies, and ensuring operational efficiency through structured contract management. Key functions include managing outsourced services such as cleaning & disinfection, landscaping, employees internal transportation & parking shuttle services, pest control, removal services, employees restaurants and baggage trolleys & porter services, along with in-house services like buildings consumables supply, janitorial services, and keys administration.
- Internal Audit
The purpose of the Internal Audit Department (IAD) is to strengthen Athens International Airport’s (AIA’s) ability to create, protect and sustain value by providing the Board and AIA’s Management with independent, risk-based and objective assurance, advice, insight and foresight.
The IAD enhances AIA’s successful achievement of its objectives, governance, risk management and control processes, decision making and oversight, reputation and credibility with its stakeholders and ability to serve the public interest.
The scope of the internal audit services cover the whole organization, including all AIA’s activities, assets, and personnel. The scope of the internal audit activities also encompasses but is not limited to objective examinations of evidence to provide independent assurance and advisory services to the Audit Committee and AIA’s Management on the adequacy and effectiveness of governance, risk management and control processes for AIA.
The IAD reports the results of its work to the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.
AIA’s IAD adhere the mandatory elements of The Institute of Internal Auditors’ International Professional Practices Framework, which are the Global Internal Audit Standards and Topical Requirements and is also governed by the provisions of the legislative framework (as set out in Law 4706/2020 and its amendments in force).
- Environmental Services
Environmental protection is a top priority for the Airport Company. The Environmental Services department is responsible to manage environmental aspects that are related to airport’s operation. It monitors aircraft noise and air quality in the neighboring areas, implements annually a Climate Change Corporate Action Plan in order to reduce energy and fuel consumption, manages all types of waste generated at the airport and promote separation at source, recycling and reuse, minimizes water usage, monitors ground water and stormwater quality and takes measures to prevent water and soil pollution. Finally, it implements a comprehensive wildlife and biodiversity management program aiming to preserve local ecosystems while promoting aviation safety as well a Community Engagement Plan with initiatives supporting various social, cultural, educational and environmental projects in the local communities around the airport.
- Information Security
Information Security plays a crucial role in protecting the Airport’s systems, data, and digital infrastructure from cyber threats and unlawful actions. By developing and overseeing the AIA’s information security strategy, this team ensures that the security measures align with legal and regulatory requirements and the company’s operational goals.
Key responsibilities include developing security policies, raising security awareness to all employees, monitoring cybersecurity measures, conducting information security risk assessments, advising management on security strategies and compliance with industry standards, staying ahead of global cybersecurity trends, and ensuring compliance with international and national security regulations and standards.
